Australian Silky Terrier: fine hair and regular hands-on care

The Australian Silky Terrier has a moderately long body under fine, straight hair. Coat maintenance takes time even though the dog is small. Daily activity with the owner belongs alongside the brushing, rather than being replaced by the Toy label.

Size and a coat clear of the ground

Both FCI and earlier UK descriptions give males 23–26 cm at the shoulder, with females allowed to be slightly smaller and weight proportional to height. The body is moderately long, with a level back, strong loin and a chest of moderate depth.

The UK description gives a desirable coat length of 13–15 cm behind the ears to the tail set. FCI instead emphasises flat, fine, glossy hair that allows daylight beneath the dog and does not impede movement. Feet should remain clear of long hair.

Brush, comb and routine checks

The AKC recommends brushing at least twice weekly with a pin or soft-bristle brush, adding a long-toothed metal comb for developing tangles. The UK category is daily grooming. Include brief checks between fuller brush-throughs rather than waiting for a tight knot to become obvious.

The same guide suggests monthly nail trimming and baths every four to six weeks with dog shampoo. It also includes regular ear checks and frequent tooth brushing. Ask for a demonstration of gentle combing and handling if the fine hair or feet are unfamiliar.

Small size still needs shared activity

The UK exercise category is up to half an hour, with a flat or apartment and small or medium garden in either setting. The AKC emphasises daily exercise and activity with the owner. Plan walks, play and learning together instead of assuming access to a small home automatically supplies an adequate routine.

Compare the work behind the coat

The Lowchen has a wavy coat without undercoat and a different choice of trims. The Miniature Pinscher has short, close hair with weekly soft-brush care. Compare the hands-on grooming and daily outings alongside those different outlines.
