Norwegian Elkhound: a square frame and a dense grey coat
The Norwegian Elkhound is a square, strongly built dog with coarse outer hair and soft undercoat. Brief regular coat work can become a larger job during shedding. Daily outings need a secure plan, as the breed’s care guide cautions against letting it roam off lead.
Size and coat texture
Both FCI and the earlier UK description give ideal shoulder heights of 52 cm for males and 49 cm for females. The UK guide also lists approximate weights of 23 kg and 20 kg respectively; the FCI supplies no numerical weight range in this section.
The back and loin are short and strong, the chest broad and deep. The medium-length outer coat is thick and coarse, without curls, and grows longest around the neck, thighs and tail. Grey shading comes from dark hair tips above the lighter undercoat.
Small sessions before the coat piles up
The AKC guide suggests regular back-brushing and a slicker to help remove the loose coat. It describes daily maintenance, with much more hair apparent during the undercoat shed. Use the session to work through what is actually loose rather than treating a fixed number of minutes as a guarantee of finishing.
For a family pet, that guide suggests bathing two or three times a year. The earlier UK grooming category is more than once weekly. Plan both ordinary maintenance and extra shedding work, with help from a groomer if you cannot remove the loose undercoat thoroughly.
Outings with a lead or enclosure
The UK exercise category is up to one hour, with a large house and garden. The AKC account describes a wide-ranging hunting background and specifically discourages off-lead roaming in neighbourhoods or parks. It also mentions swimming and agility as possible activities; choose a safe setting and an activity that suits the individual dog.
Compare two different northern outlines
The Finnish Spitz is also square but smaller in its own height description, with standing red hair and a pin-brush routine. The Siberian Husky is slightly longer than tall, with a smoother-lying coat and a higher UK exercise category. Those differences are more useful for planning than the shared northern appearance.
