Otterhound: a rough double coat and shared outdoor activity

The Otterhound is a large hound with a rough double coat, substantial feet and a strong body. Coat work extends beyond a quick surface brush, while a garden needs to be part of an organised activity plan.

The double coat and adult size

The FCI coat is 4–8 cm long, dense, rough and harsh but not wiry, with softer hair naturally on the head and lower legs. Undercoat is evident, and either layer may have a slightly oily texture. Natural presentation is required for exhibition; the coat still needs regular maintenance.

FCI height is approximately 69 cm for males and 61 cm for females, matching the earlier UK description. There is no numeric weight range. The body is strong, with a level topline, broad back and short, strong loin.

Brush through and attend to the beard

The UK grooming category is more than once a week. AKC care advice describes brushing once or twice weekly according to coat length and texture, using a slicker and medium comb. It also calls attention to cleaning the beard, where dirt and food can collect.

Nail care every week or two is included in that guidance. Ask a groomer to demonstrate how to work through the actual double coat and beard, rather than treating the rough appearance as a reason to leave the coat alone.

An enclosure is a beginning

The UK guide lists more than two hours of exercise, a large house, large garden and country setting. AKC recommends mental as well as physical activity and points out that some dogs will rest in a large yard rather than exercise themselves.

Long walks with time to investigate scents, and activities such as tracking or obedience classes, are options in the care guide. Plan shared outings and suitable enclosed space. Discuss suitable activities with someone familiar with the individual dog, including what is practical throughout the week.

Compare coat and space

Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen offer a much lower rough-coated comparison with a hard, flat coat. Bloodhounds have a shorter body coat and different size and fold-care questions. Think about room for the adult dog to rest, turn, travel and be groomed, as well as the outdoor time you can provide.
