Picardy Sheepdog: a crisp coat through shedding season
The Picardy Sheepdog has a body slightly longer than its height and a crisp, rough coat. Its own AKC care guidance appears under the name Berger Picard. The relatively rustic outline does not mean that the same brushing frequency will suit ordinary weeks and a period of heavy shedding.
Proportions and height
FCI describes a body about 5–8 percent longer than its height, with a level back. It gives 60–65 cm for males and 55–60 cm for females, with a 1 cm tolerance. The earlier UK guide uses the main ranges without that tolerance. Neither provides a numerical weight here. Keep this breed separate from the Briard despite their shared French shepherd-dog associations.
Texture rather than sculpting
The standards describe a harsh, crisp outer coat about 5–6 cm long, with fine, dense undercoat. This is not the Briard’s long goat-like hair or the Bouvier’s own coarse covering and beard. When choosing between them, compare actual texture and routine handling rather than assuming that every rough-coated shepherd needs the same tools, haircut or amount of time.
Change the routine when shedding
AKC suggests monthly brushing in ordinary periods, but working through the coat every one or two days during shedding, using an undercoat rake and slicker. It also mentions occasional bathing with a product suitable for a crisp coat and regular nail care. The earlier UK guide places grooming in a weekly category. These descriptions have different scopes; neither supports ignoring the dog between sessions or applying a monthly interval during heavy shedding.
Daily shared activity
The UK category is up to an hour daily, with a small country house and small or medium garden. AKC calls for at least one long daily walk and shared activity. A garden is useful space, not a complete description of that involvement. During shedding, allow enough time after an outing to check the coat and work through loose undercoat rather than deferring everything to a monthly session. Include the changing coat routine when deciding whether the ordinary week has enough room for this dog.
