Polish Lowland Sheepdog: a long coat on a rectangular body

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog carries a thick, shaggy coat on a compact rectangular body. A full coat and a shorter pet finish involve different amounts of hair, but both require regular checking. Hair around the face should not prevent seeing the dog or monitoring how it moves.

Body and measurements

Both FCI and the earlier UK guide describe a 9:10 height-to-length proportion, with heights of 45–50 cm for males and 42–47 cm for females. Neither supplies a numerical weight here. A level back and substantial coat give the outline, but the height ranges should not be used to invent a weight estimate or a prediction about an individual puppy’s final size.

What the coat covers

The outer hair is long, thick and shaggy, with soft undercoat; FCI allows straight or slightly waved hair. The UK description says hair should not impede vision or movement and favours the natural outline for showing. This differs from the Old English Sheepdog’s rising topline and from the Briard’s longer-legged outline. Shared long hair does not erase those differences or prescribe one haircut.

Brushing and pet finishes

AKC advises at least a thorough weekly brushing for a full coat. A puppy or summer clip for a pet still needs routine brushing to remove debris and prevent tangles. It also recommends weekly ear checks, cleaning if needed, and regular nail care. The UK category is daily grooming, so budget frequent handling between longer sessions. Ask for a demonstration of reaching the coat underneath rather than repeatedly smoothing the surface.

Activity alongside coat work

The UK guide lists more than two hours of daily exercise, a small house and large garden in town or country. AKC likewise describes ample daily activity with the owner. Make room for shared walks and other activity rather than counting the garden as the whole daily plan. When comparing with the Old English Sheepdog or Briard, account for the individual grooming finish and daily outings together; the shorter body does not make the long coat look after itself.
