Sloughi: a short coat and a slightly shorter body

The Sloughi has a very short, dense, fine coat and an outline that is slightly taller than it is long. Those proportions help distinguish it from other lean hounds; daily activity and access to secure space remain practical questions of their own.

Proportions and height

The FCI body-length-to-height ratio is 0.96, or 9.6:10. The description includes a short, nearly horizontal back and a slightly arched loin. It is a subtly different shape from the approximately square Saluki or the more upright Azawakh.

FCI height is 66–72 cm for males and 61–68 cm for females, with no numeric weight range. Its examples using a 70 cm male and a 65 cm female illustrate proportions; they do not replace those height ranges.

Weekly short-coat care

The UK guide lists weekly grooming. AKC care advice describes a weekly soft brush or hound glove, occasional bathing, nail care and ear checks. There is little long hair to disentangle, but a short coat still benefits from regular attention.

The earlier UK coat description mentions winter undercoat. The FCI description of very short, dense, fine hair does not itself establish that undercoat is absent. Neither statement provides a guarantee about shedding or a person’s reaction to the dog.

Activity and the home

The UK categories are more than two hours of exercise, a large house, large garden and country setting. AKC guidance calls for ample exercise, including opportunities in a secure enclosure, and mentions lure coursing as an activity to consider.

Check how that activity can happen through an ordinary working week. A country address does not automatically provide a secure running area, and the guide’s home categories cannot decide whether a particular household is suitable. Assess the available space, walking routine and individual dog.

Compare the other lean hounds

The Azawakh has short, fine hair and a height-to-body-length ratio of 10:9, with a slightly lower ratio allowed in females. Saluki include smooth and feathered coats and have body length approximately equal to height. These are useful differences to compare when appearance draws you to all three, before deciding which care routine and exercise arrangements you can maintain.
