Smooth Fox Terrier: a short coat and an active daily routine
The Smooth Fox Terrier has a short, level back and a hard, dense coat lying flat. It shares a familiar outline with the Wire Fox Terrier, but its coat routine is substantially different.
Height and coat
FCI male height must not exceed 39 cm, with females slightly less; there is no separate numeric female limit. Weight is 7.5–8 kg for males and 7–7.5 kg for females, matching the earlier UK description.
The coat is straight, flat, smooth, hard, dense and abundant, including the belly and undersides of the thighs. A short coat is a texture and coverage description, rather than a reason to omit regular grooming.
Weekly brushing and routine checks
AKC care guidance recommends weekly grooming with a thick brush or hound glove. It gives a bath about monthly as a usual routine, with extra bathing when the dog gets dirty. Regular nail care, weekly ear checks and frequent tooth brushing are included.
The UK grooming category is also weekly. Ask for a demonstration of the tools and handling, and include the smaller ear, nail and dental tasks when planning time for care.
Exercise with the dog
The UK guide lists up to one hour of exercise daily, a small house, small or medium garden and either town or country. AKC describes ample exercise through long walks, ball play or activity in a large, securely fenced area, and advises keeping the dog on a leash outside enclosed space.
Identify where those walks and play sessions can happen through the week. The UK category is broad guidance rather than a fixed ceiling on all activity; the individual dog’s age and condition should shape the routine.
Two close-coated comparisons
Wire Fox Terriers have a dense, wiry outer coat with soft undercoat and a separate show-stripping versus pet-clipping choice. Manchester Terriers have a short, glossy coat and ideal heights of 41 cm for males and 38 cm for females. Compare coat work and dimensions together rather than treating all smooth-looking terriers as equivalent.
