Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier: daily work for a silky coat
The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier has a soft, silky coat that falls in loose waves or curls. Daily brushing and combing are a substantial part of ownership, and puppy coat development deserves its own consideration.
Texture changes while growing
FCI describes a single coat that is soft and silky, not harsh, with young dogs excepted from the adult texture description. Puppy color and texture pass through changes; the standard says the mature coat usually develops between 18 months and two and a half years. The earlier UK description places stabilisation at about 24 months.
The FCI back is strong and level, with length from withers to tail base approximately equal to height. Trimming is permitted, following the outline without sculpting. An untrimmed coat at its longest should not exceed 12.7 cm.
A daily brush-and-comb sequence
AKC care guidance begins with a daily pin or slicker brush to remove dirt and loose hair, followed by a thorough metal comb with medium and fine teeth. It advises working tangles apart with the brush, comb and fingers rather than cutting them out with scissors. Ask a groomer for help with difficult matting.
The UK overview also lists daily grooming. Regular nail care, ear checks and frequent tooth brushing with dog toothpaste are included in the AKC guide, alongside the coat work.
Height and weight meanings
FCI male height is 46–48 cm and weight 18–20.5 kg, with females somewhat less and no numeric female interval. The earlier UK description instead gives approximately 46–49 cm and 16–20.5 kg for males. Keep those ranges with their source when comparing size.
Daily activity and useful comparisons
The UK guide lists up to one hour of exercise, a small house, small or medium garden and either town or country. AKC stresses daily shared exercise, a secure fence for play and a leash on walks. Plan activity around the dog’s age and condition.
Kerry Blue Terriers have their own weekly brush-and-comb and regular full-grooming routine. Bedlington Terriers have a linty, non-wiry coat with periodic clipping. Compare the grooming demonstrations and the time required between appointments as well as the texture.
