Spanish Water Dog: curls without a brushing routine
The Spanish Water Dog’s woolly curls can form cords when allowed to grow. Its own care guidance advises against brushing, making it a poor candidate for a generic curly-coat checklist. Choosing a clipped or longer coat means understanding the breed’s particular method and finding experienced help before problems accumulate.
Proportion, size and allowances
Both FCI and the earlier UK guide describe a 9:8 body-length-to-height proportion, heights of 44–50 cm for males and 40–46 cm for females, and weights of 18–22 kg and 14–18 kg. FCI allows up to 2 cm deviation only while the dog maintains balance. That conditional allowance is not an unrestricted extension of the main height ranges.
Clip or grow with guidance
FCI permits complete, even clipping without decorative shaping. Its show-coat guidance gives a minimum length of 3 cm and a recommended maximum of 12 cm, or 15 cm with the curl extended, so the curl can be assessed. Those presentation limits do not establish a pet clipping calendar. AKC advises no brushing and ties the clipping interval to the intended coat length. The earlier UK overview mentions clipping once or twice a year; discuss the chosen finish rather than treating that broad note as a compulsory calendar.
Cords need their own method
AKC stresses the expertise involved when growing cords over months and recommends experienced help. Seek a Spanish Water Dog breeder or groomer who can demonstrate this coat’s method; Komondor cords and Bergamasco flocks are not interchangeable instructions. Include regular ear checks and frequent tooth brushing, ideally daily as the AKC practical health guidance suggests. A deliberately corded outline still needs observation and ongoing care.
Daily activity and comparisons
The UK guide lists up to an hour of exercise daily and grooming more than weekly, with a small country house and small or medium garden. AKC describes active shared exercise, reserving prolonged strenuous activity for full skeletal maturity. That age qualification matters when planning a young dog’s outings. Compare the Bergamasco and Komondor for different coat-development demands, including who will demonstrate the developing coat and how much time that stage takes.
