Staffordshire Bull Terrier: compact build, separate size figures and coat care
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has a muscular, close-coupled body, a level topline and a smooth, short coat. Its small category describes a compact dog rather than a lightly built one. The earlier UK and FCI standard 76 both relate height to weight, but their numerical endpoints differ and are worth keeping separate.
What the figures actually say
The UK description gives desirable height of 36–41 cm, with males at 13–17 kg and females at 11–15.4 kg. The FCI standard instead gives desirable height of 35.5–40.5 cm, males at 12.7–17 kg, and females at 11–15.4 kg. Treating one set as an exact quotation of the other would hide the difference.
These are standard descriptions, not an instruction to feed every dog towards the top of a range. The wide front, deep brisket and well-sprung ribs explain the compact outline more clearly than weight considered on its own.
Simple coat, specific maintenance
The AKC recommends weekly use of a horsehair mitt or hound glove to remove dead hair, with occasional baths. It calls for nail trimming at least monthly and ear cleaning to address wax and debris. It also advises asking a breeder or veterinarian to demonstrate suitable ear-cleaning materials and technique, rather than improvising deep inside the ear.
The UK weekly grooming category broadly fits that coat routine, but does not specify those tools or the separate nail and ear tasks. Smooth hair still sheds and still needs regular attention.
Exercise with conditions in mind
The earlier UK guide records up to an hour daily. The AKC calls for regular exercise and warns against overworking the dog in warm or humid conditions. Its examples of activity are not a universal programme for dogs of every age or fitness level.
A small house and a small or medium garden in either town or country appear in the UK categories. Plan suitable walks and shared activity around the individual dog and conditions; the space label does not provide that routine by itself.
Keep the similar names separate
The Bull Terrier has an egg-shaped head and no numerical height or weight limit in its own standard. The Miniature Bull Terrier has a 35.5 cm height ceiling but no weight limit. These are useful comparisons, not alternate names or substitute measurements for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
