Sussex Spaniel: golden liver hair on a strong, low frame
The Sussex Spaniel’s FCI description gives it a strong body with short, well-boned legs. Its rich golden liver color, with golden shading towards the hair tips, is a distinguishing feature. The body coat is abundant and flat, while the ears carry softer, wavy hair.
Undercoat beneath the flat outer hair
The coat includes ample undercoat for weather resistance, without a tendency for the body hair to curl. The forequarters and hindquarters have moderate feathering. The Clumber also has straight, silky hair, but its predominantly white coat and longer body create a different outline.
The Welsh Springer’s red and white pattern provides another useful contrast. Its ears and tail are only lightly feathered, rather than sharing the Sussex ear-hair description.
Low-built does not mean a low exercise entry
The earlier UK guide places the Sussex in the medium category, with more than two hours of daily exercise and grooming more than once a week. It lists a small house, large garden and country setting.
The Clumber has a lower exercise category and smaller garden category, despite its large size label. The Welsh Springer shares the Sussex exercise and grooming entries but covers town or country. These older guide comparisons can help you weigh time and space without predicting an individual dog’s needs.
Match care and exercise to the dog’s stage
AKC’s Sussex care advice describes bathing, brushing and combing, with attention to hair beneath the feet and regular nail care. It advises against shaving the coat except when necessary. The coat’s weather-resistant description does not remove those practical tasks.
For exercise, AKC distinguishes puppies from adults: no strenuous exercise before one year, and no jumping or agility-type work before at least 18 months. It mentions long walks and swimming for adults. The older UK time category should not be read as a puppy exercise target.
Ideal height, approximate weight
The FCI height of 38–41 cm is an ideal range. The weight of approximately 23 kg is a different kind of figure, not a compulsory exact target for every dog. The Clumber comparison puts those figures beside separate male and female ideal weights, rather than another single approximate weight.
