Turkish Kangal Dog: dense coat and gradual shared activity
The Turkish Kangal Dog has a large, powerful body and a dense double coat. Its own height and coat descriptions differ between the UK guide and FCI standard. The separately listed Anatolian Shepherd profile uses its own UK and US sources, so the two guides should be read individually.
Separate size descriptions
FCI gives heights of 72–78 cm for males and 65–73 cm for females, each with a tolerance of 2 cm. Weights are 48–60 kg and 40–50 kg. The earlier UK guide gives heights of 74–81 cm and 71–79 cm without numerical weights here. FCI describes body length 10–12 percent greater than height, while UK gives approximately 10:9. These are separate standard accounts, not interchangeable measurements for either profile.
Coat and seasonal work
FCI describes harsh guard hair of 3–7 cm with dense undercoat, longer around the neck, shoulders and thighs. UK describes a short, dense, close-lying double coat without feathering on ears, legs or tail. The Kangal Dog Club of America notes twice-yearly undercoat shedding. The UK grooming category is more than weekly; plan extra attention as loose undercoat comes away rather than assuming that the short appearance means little hair to manage.
Growing dogs and steady outings
The club’s guidance for a growing Kangal emphasises regular, steady activity, increasing exercise gradually and avoiding pushing a young dog too hard. A small yard does not necessarily provide that activity by itself. Discuss appropriate outings for the individual growing dog with a knowledgeable professional. The guidance is a practical account of gradual activity, not a prescribed jogging programme.
Time and comparisons
The earlier UK exercise category is more than two hours daily and lists a large country home and garden. Keep that category separate from advice specifically about growing puppies. Include shared outings and secure space in the plan. Compare the separate Anatolian profile’s coat, measurements and daily guidance, or the smaller Catalan Sheepdog’s rough coat, before deciding what level of regular handling and activity fits the household.
