Basset Bleu de Gascogne: short legs, a long body and an active routine
The Basset Bleu de Gascogne combines a low outline with a short, dense coat and distinctive mottling. Its practical requirements deserve a closer look than the word Basset alone: the UK guide pairs a small-house category with substantial daily exercise.
Proportions and the blue coat
The FCI standard gives an approximate height-to-body-length ratio of 5:8 and chest depth of about two-thirds of height. The back is long and supported, with a short loin and a chest extending below the elbows. These are specific proportions rather than a description of every short-legged hound.
Its short, fairly thick, dense hair carries black-and-white mottling that produces the slate-blue effect. The UK description calls the coat short, dense and not too fine. There is no long feathering or rough facial furnishing to explain the color.
Plan for activity as well as floor space
The earlier UK guide lists more than two hours of daily exercise, a small house, large garden and country setting. The breed’s own RKC guide, read on 15 October 2026, shows the same care categories. They are broad planning guidance, to be adapted to the dog’s age and condition.
Before choosing one, map out the walks and outdoor time you can provide through an ordinary week. Check the garden’s boundaries and the practical route from home to suitable walking space. A small house and a large exercise commitment can coexist; the home-size label does not replace a daily plan.
Wisdom Panel’s exercise guidance also includes daily walks and time outdoors to sniff. Make room for those shared outings as well as the coat routine; the short-legged outline does not remove the need for daily activity.
Weekly brushing and routine handling
The UK grooming category is weekly. Wisdom Panel also recommends a weekly brush to remove loose hair and dirt from the short coat. Include regular ear checks for dirt or wax, with cleaning when needed, rather than waiting for the next full coat session.
Its care guidance includes nail trimming and dental care, with tooth brushing at home and professional dental attention. Ask for a demonstration if ear cleaning or nail handling is unfamiliar, so these smaller jobs become part of an ordinary routine.
Height and related hounds
FCI height is 34–38 cm for both sexes. The earlier UK description gives 30–38 cm, so its lower limit differs; neither source supplies a numeric weight range here.
Grand Bleu de Gascogne have a much taller, longer-legged outline despite the shared blue mottling. Basset Hounds have a smooth, close coat and an FCI height of 33–38 cm, but the UK exercise categories differ. Compare the actual proportions and routine rather than choosing by the shared Basset name.
