Canadian Eskimo Dog: dense undercoat and seasonal care
The Canadian Eskimo Dog has a powerful body, a thick neck and a substantial double coat. Its outline can look especially large beneath a male’s mane. This guide keeps its own measurements and coat work separate from the Greenland Dog, even though both have northern working backgrounds.
Measurements beneath the mane
FCI and the earlier UK guide give male heights of 58–70 cm and weights of 30–40 kg, with females at 50–60 cm and 18–30 kg. The broad, deep chest and well-developed loin contribute to the powerful outline. FCI describes the hips as almost the same height as the withers. A thick mane can increase the apparent height without changing the dog’s actual measurement.
Guard hair and loose undercoat
FCI describes hard, stiff outer hair of 7–15 cm; the UK description gives 8–15 cm. Both describe dense undercoat and generally shorter coats in females. The UK summary category says short coat, but the fuller description still includes substantial outer hair and furnishings. Look at that fuller account when judging the work involved, rather than relying on the category alone.
A routine that changes during shedding
The Canadian Kennel Club’s own breed guide describes ordinary brushing through much of the year, with a coat rake when dense undercoat is shed as warmer weather approaches. This adds practical detail alongside the earlier weekly UK grooming category, with attention to loose underfur and developing mats during a moult. Ask someone familiar with the breed to demonstrate suitable handling of the actual coat. Neither account sets a fixed bath interval, so the short summary should not become a compulsory washing calendar.
Time outside and comparisons
The UK exercise category is more than two hours daily and lists a large country home and garden. CKC describes a need for substantial outdoor exercise, without setting that numerical daily threshold. These are planning descriptions, not a guarantee about fitness or an instruction to put every dog into harness. Compare the Greenland Dog’s own dimensions and undercoat routine, or the Tibetan Mastiff’s different seasonal grooming and activity account.
