Dandie Dinmont Terrier: a crisp coat and a long, low body

The Dandie Dinmont’s silky topknot contrasts with the crisp coat along its long, low body. Its curving topline and coat texture make it a distinct comparison with other short-legged terriers.

Proportions and working-condition weight

FCI height is 20–28 cm. Length from withers to tail root should not exceed twice the height, preferably measuring 2.5–5 cm less. Weight is 8–11 kg in good working condition, with lower weights preferred. The earlier UK description gives the same main guidance.

The body is long, strong and flexible, with a slight downward curve behind the shoulders and an arch over the loin. Coat is about 5 cm long, combining soft, linty undercoat and a harder outer layer that feels crisp rather than wiry.

Daily brushing and periodic stripping

The UK guide lists grooming more than once weekly. AKC care advice calls for daily brushing and removing dead coat by stripping at least a couple of times a year. A breeder can demonstrate the method or recommend suitable grooming help.

AKC also includes nail care at least monthly, ear maintenance and frequent tooth brushing with dog toothpaste. Allow time for those smaller tasks and for the topknot and feathering, alongside the less frequent full coat work.

Walks suited to the dog

The UK exercise category is up to one hour daily, with a small house, small or medium garden and either town or country. AKC gives roughly half an hour twice daily as an example, through brisk walks or yard play, with a leash or secure fence outdoors.

The care guide distinguishes that routine from long-distance running or cycling companionship. Discuss suitable activity for the individual dog rather than extending the walking example into a demanding endurance programme.

Compare the low outlines

Skye Terriers carry a long, straight outer coat and have separate ideal height and nose-to-tail length guidance. Glen of Imaal Terriers have a harsh outer layer, soft undercoat and a slightly rising topline. Similar low outlines can therefore involve quite different coat and activity decisions.
