English Setter: silky feathering and an active outdoor life

The English Setter’s long, silky coat is slightly wavy rather than curly, with feathering down the legs. Keeping that hair free of tangles is a regular task alongside substantial exercise. A coat that flows neatly after grooming still needs attention after time outdoors.

Height and a clean outline

The FCI gives males 65–68 cm and females 61–65 cm at the shoulder. The earlier UK guide extends the male range to 69 cm; neither provides a numerical weight here. The UK description also notes that working English Setters may be proportionally lighter in build.

The back is short and level, with a deep chest and well-sprung ribs. Feathering on the legs, ears and tail adds to the outline, while the body remains of moderate length. Do not judge the frame only by the amount of hair.

Brush and comb before tangles develop

The AKC guide recommends a soft bristle brush at least weekly, with a long-toothed metal comb for emerging tangles. The earlier UK grooming category is more than once weekly. Give the feathered areas their own careful comb-through rather than stopping once the back looks smooth.

The AKC suggests monthly nail trimming, baths every four to six weeks and regular tidying around the face and feet. Its care advice also includes ear checks. A groomer can show you which areas need tidying and how to keep the longer hair manageable between visits.

Outings for adults and growing dogs

The UK guide places exercise above two hours daily and allows town or country with a large house and garden. The AKC suggests enclosed runs or play, long walks and hikes. For puppies and young dogs, it advises avoiding very strenuous or high-impact activity while bones and joints develop, which may take until about two years.

Compare the other setter coats

The Gordon Setter has flatter black-and-tan feathering and its own monthly grooming and bath routine. The Irish Setter has rich chestnut hair and an AKC recommendation to brush at least twice weekly. Their similar UK exercise categories still leave meaningful differences in coat handling and size.
