Greyhound: a close coat and planned exercise

The Greyhound has a fine, close coat, a deep chest and an arched loin. A simple coat-care routine is part of the appeal, but choosing one still calls for a realistic walking schedule and a suitable place for running.

The characteristic outline

The FCI description combines a long head and neck, deep chest and arched loin. These are more useful details than treating every short-coated hound as the same shape. Its ideal height is 71–76 cm for males and 68–71 cm for females.

The earlier UK description gives the same male height range but 69–71 cm for females. The female lower limit therefore differs between the guides. The FCI standard provides no numeric weight range; height alone does not establish what an individual dog should weigh.

Keeping the short coat in order

The earlier UK guide places grooming in the weekly category. AKC care advice describes a weekly rub with a damp cloth or hound glove, alongside regular bathing, nail maintenance, ear checks and dental care. The short coat reduces the work of managing long hair, while leaving those other tasks in place.

It is worth planning how routine handling will work for the dog you choose, rather than assuming that a smooth coat means no maintenance. Coat length and willingness to accept grooming are different questions.

A routine with room to move

The UK exercise category is up to one hour daily, with a large house and large garden, in either town or country. AKC guidance describes a regular exercise schedule with opportunities to run in a securely fenced area, and a leash outside an enclosure.

Use the UK category as broad guidance, not as a promise that every Greyhound will fit the same timetable. Identify walking routes and enclosed running options in advance. A large garden is useful only if its fencing and use make it suitable for the planned activity.

Compare coat and scale

The Whippet shares a fine, short, close coat but has much smaller FCI desirable height ranges, 47–51 cm for males and 44–47 cm for females. Deerhounds give the opposite comparison: a larger-boned, rough-coated outline, minimum desirable heights and substantially more hair to brush. Compare the room needed for resting and transport as well as the grooming routine.
