Irish Wolfhound: minimum size and a rough coat
The Irish Wolfhound brings unusually large dimensions to ordinary tasks such as walking, grooming and travel. Its rough coat is only one part of the commitment; practical room for an adult dog deserves attention before comparing appearance.
Read the minimums carefully
The FCI standard gives minimum heights for mature hounds of 79 cm for males and 71 cm for females. Minimum expected weights at those heights are 54.5 kg and 40.5 kg respectively, increasing proportionally with height. These are not closed weight ranges or a target weight for every dog.
The earlier UK description gives 40.9 kg for the female minimum rather than the FCI figure of 40.5 kg. The FCI text also discusses a desired male average height of at least 86 cm as a breed-type aim. That aim has a different meaning from the mature male minimum of 79 cm.
Body and coat
The body is longer than high, with a long back and a deep chest. Coat on the body, legs and head is rough and hard, with especially wiry hair over the eyes and on the beard. Maintaining that texture involves a different routine from caring for a smooth-coated hound.
The UK guide places grooming at more than once a week. AKC care advice calls for a thorough weekly brushing to remove dirt and loose hair, plus regular nail care. Use the actual coat’s condition to plan any additional brushing rather than treating either frequency as a guarantee of a finished coat.
Make space for daily activity
The UK categories are more than two hours of exercise, a large house, large garden and country setting. AKC guidance describes long walks and opportunities for play on a leash or in a fenced area; activities such as tracking or lure coursing may also be explored.
The daily category should not be turned into a requirement for a growing puppy to complete an adult exercise schedule. Discuss age-appropriate activity and consider the practical room needed for resting, turning, grooming and transport at adult size.
Compare the whole commitment
Deerhounds have their own minimum desirable height and approximate weight figures, rather than the Wolfhound’s minimum expected weights. Borzoi offer a long, supple coat and desirable height ranges. These are useful alternatives to compare for scale, coat work and exercise arrangements, without assuming the shared hound category predicts household suitability.
