Lagotto Romagnolo: curls and a practical trim
The Lagotto Romagnolo has a square outline and dense, woolly curls with a rough surface. A rustic finish still needs regular grooming. The useful question is how to keep the actual coat clean and manageable, rather than how to reproduce a fluffy outline from another curly-coated breed.
Size without borrowed measurements
FCI gives 43–48 cm for males and 41–46 cm for females, with a 1 cm tolerance, and weights of 13–16 kg and 11–14 kg. The earlier UK guide uses those ranges and adds ideals of 46 cm and 43 cm. Keep those UK ideals with their own source rather than inserting them into FCI wording. FCI describes a square body, with length approximately matching height; the earlier UK general description also gives a square outline.
A natural curly outline
The coat forms close ring curls, with looser hair on the head and substantial whiskers and beard. FCI describes a uniformly clipped coat no thicker than 2–3 cm for assessment, leaving its curls and texture visible and the eyes uncovered. That standard presentation is not a compulsory pet clipping interval. The UK description likewise favours a natural, rustic outline rather than stylised shaping.
Regular maintenance
AKC advises regular trimming and grooming, noting that the amount of matting varies between dogs. It also recommends weekly ear checks. Discuss a suitable routine for the individual coat with a groomer who knows the breed; these sources do not supply one universal brushing or bathing interval. A short finish still needs inspection, while dense curls should not be left until tangles determine the next appointment.
Activity and alternatives
The UK exercise category is more than two hours daily, with grooming more than weekly, a small house and large country garden. AKC’s account emphasises shared physical and mental activity without the same hourly category. Keep those descriptions separate when planning ordinary days. Barbet and Portuguese Water Dog profiles show different curls, coat varieties and finishes; compare the maintenance needed for each finish, including the work between professional grooming appointments.
