Large Munsterlander: feathering to check after active outings

The Large Munsterlander has a strong, nearly square body and a long, dense coat that lies sleekly. Its leg and tail feathering needs regular attention, particularly after outdoor activity. Daily exercise and shared occupation are a substantial part of the routine.

Size and a near-square body

The FCI gives average shoulder heights of 60–65 cm for males and 58–63 cm for females, allowing 2 cm over the specified size, and approximately 30 kg weight. The earlier UK guide has the same height ranges but no numerical weight or extra height tolerance in its size section.

Body length should be close to shoulder height, with up to 2 cm extra length allowed. Hair is long and dense but not curly or standing away. The head is short-haired, while the ears, backs of the legs and tail carry longer feathering.

Add time during seasonal shedding

The AKC recommends brushing and occasional baths, increasing coat attention during seasonal shedding in late spring and early autumn. The earlier UK guide places grooming above once weekly. A thorough pass through the feathering is a useful part of the check after an outing, not just a way to neaten the visible outline.

The same guide includes regular nail trimming, ear checks for wax and debris, and tooth brushing. Allow time for these alongside the coat, particularly when seasonal loose hair makes the grooming session longer.

An outlet for a busy working dog

The UK exercise category is more than two hours daily, with a large house and garden in either town or country. The AKC describes frequent exercise and stimulation, suggesting running or play in a fenced area when the dog is not used for hunting. Plan a shared daily outlet rather than relying on the dog to invent its own work.

Compare two long-coated routines

The German Longhaired Pointer shares a close body coat with feathering but its own guide specifically highlights burrs and ear-base knots after field outings. The English Setter has silkier, slightly wavy hair and an AKC bath interval of four to six weeks. Compare those hands-on differences alongside their own sizes.
