Maremma Sheepdog: a dense white coat and a working-home decision

The Maremma is a substantial, longer-than-tall dog with long, rather harsh hair. Coat care is only part of the commitment. Its own American breed club places a strong emphasis on a purposeful working home, which deserves attention before choosing the breed.

Separate FCI and UK size descriptions

The FCI gives males 67–73.5 cm and 40–52 kg, females 62–70 cm and 35–45 kg. The earlier UK guide instead gives ideal heights of 65–73 cm and 60–68 cm, with ideal weights of 35–45 kg and 30–40 kg.

The body is longer than tall, with a strong, straight back. Long outer hair is rather harsh and generally straight, allowing a slight wave. The UK description adds a thick winter undercoat and fuller hair around the neck.

Tools and a complete wash-and-dry session

The UK grooming category is more than once weekly. Four Paws Groom School’s Maremma article suggests a brush, undercoat rake and steel comb. Brush through before bathing; for muddy lower legs, its simpler option is washing with water and drying them.

Its washing advice includes dog shampoo, a non-slip surface, comfortable water, thorough rinsing and drying the whole coat, including around the tail base and ears. Ask a groomer to demonstrate safe drying equipment and handling for the actual coat.

Discuss the working home before the exercise timetable

The UK exercise category exceeds two hours daily, with a large country house and garden. The Maremma Sheepdog Club of America explicitly does not recommend the breed as an ordinary pet, emphasising its working role and owner commitment. Speak to the club about the proposed home and purpose rather than assuming a garden and a long walk settle that decision.

Compare separate white guardian coats

The Kuvasz has a wavy double coat and its own weekly-brushing guidance. The Pyrenean Mountain Dog has distinct height ranges and pin-or-slicker maintenance. Their appearance provides a useful comparison, but each needs its own home discussion and care plan.
