Norwegian Buhund: a square outline and regular coat work

The Norwegian Buhund has a compact, square body, pointed ears and a tightly curled tail. A harsh outer coat sits above soft, woolly undercoat. Regular brushing and extra work during shedding belong in the weekly plan alongside shared activity, even though the visible outline is fairly smooth.

Range versus UK ideal

FCI gives heights of 43–47 cm for males and 41–45 cm for females, with approximate weights of 14–18 kg and 12–16 kg. The earlier UK guide instead gives an ideal male height of 45 cm, females somewhat smaller, and weight proportionate to size. That UK wording is not a separate numerical weight range. The short, strong back and balanced body describe a square outline.

Outer hair and undercoat

The outer coat is thick, hard and smooth lying, with shorter hair on the head and front of the legs. Longer hair appears around the neck and chest, behind the thighs and on the tail. The soft undercoat adds density without making the whole coat a long, decorative covering. A quick glance at the shorter surface hair does not show how much loose undercoat needs removing.

Brushing through the year

AKC suggests brushing two or three times weekly, more often during undercoat shedding once or twice yearly, and regular nail trimming. The UK grooming category is more than weekly. Agree an approach for working through the actual coat with a breed-experienced person. There is no compulsory stripping programme or fixed bathing calendar in the selected guidance; the immediate task is to keep up with regular and seasonal coat work.

Exercise and comparisons

The UK category is up to an hour daily, with a small house and small or medium garden. AKC instead describes vigorous exercise twice daily and a range of shared activities. Keep those accounts separate when planning for the individual rather than turning them into one invented daily dose. Compare the rectangular Icelandic Sheepdog and smaller Lancashire Heeler for different dimensions, coat lengths and everyday handling.
