Sealyham Terrier: an oblong outline and a choice of coat finish
The Sealyham Terrier is low, substantial and oblong rather than square. Its long, hard outer coat and furnishings need regular care, with practical pet options to discuss alongside a natural show presentation.
Height and approximate ideal weight
FCI height must not exceed 31 cm. Ideal weight is approximately 9 kg for males and 8.2 kg for females, with overall conformation, balance, type and substance emphasised. The earlier UK guide gives approximately 8 kg for females instead.
The back is level, the body flexible and the chest broad and deep. A long, hard, wiry outer coat lies over weather-resistant undercoat, making the furnishings part of the everyday grooming discussion.
Brushing between full grooming visits
The UK overview lists daily grooming. AKC care guidance describes brushing and combing every two or three days and regular stripping or clipping. It offers a short pet trim with reduced furnishings as an easier-care option and suggests bathing every three or four weeks.
The same guide includes regular nails and eye and ear checks during grooming. Its health section discusses a shorter eyebrow fall for pets. Ask a groomer to demonstrate a suitable finish and how to maintain it, rather than assuming every pet needs full show furnishings.
Activity and warmer days
The UK guide lists up to one hour of exercise, a small house, small or medium garden and either town or country. AKC describes running in safely enclosed space and advises choosing early morning or evening exercise in hot, humid weather.
Plan activity that leaves the dog moderately tired rather than exhausted, adapting it to age, condition and weather. The care guide also notes that furnishings may need washing and conditioning after outdoor activity.
Two other low-built terriers
Cesky Terriers have a fine, slightly wavy coat and a clipped body, while Glen of Imaal Terriers combine a harsh outer coat with soft undercoat and a different adult size description. Compare the actual coat routines as well as the low outlines.
