Pembroke Welsh Corgi: daily loose-hair removal from a dense coat

The Pembroke is low-set and sturdy with a straight outer coat and dense undercoat. Loose hair is an ordinary part of maintenance, increasing during seasonal shedding. Daily walks and play should fit the dog’s short-legged build rather than a more demanding pace set by a bicycle.

Approximate height and sex-specific weights

FCI and earlier UK descriptions give an approximate shoulder height of 25–30 cm, with weights of 10–12 kg for males and 9–11 kg for females. The body is medium in length, slightly tapering when viewed from above, with a level topline.

The coat is medium in its detailed standard description, straight and never soft, wavy or wiry, over dense undercoat. This gives more information about maintenance than the UK overview’s broad short-coat category.

Comb and slicker, with extra seasonal work

The AKC recommends a daily once-over with a comb and slicker. During the heavier late-spring or early-summer shed, a bath can loosen dead hair; the coat should be completely dry before brushing, with a rake useful for undercoat. The UK grooming category is more than once weekly.

Regular nail trimming, weekly ear checks and tooth brushing are also in the breed guide. Allow time for those smaller jobs as well as collecting loose undercoat, rather than making every grooming session only about shedding.

Moderate shared activity

The UK guide allows a small house and small or medium garden in town or country, with exercise up to one hour. The AKC suggests walks or slow jogs and advises against trying to keep pace with a bicycle, or exercising in extreme heat or cold. Plan the pace and conditions around the dog, with fresh water available after activity.

Compare two low frames and another small herder

The Cardigan has its own 30 cm ideal and proportional-weight description, with weekly brushing and explicit jump-and-stair advice. The Shetland Sheepdog is taller in its own ideals and has long feathering with particular mat checks. Similar small-size labels conceal different handling and grooming needs.
